Sweet Corn
Sweet corn is grown throughout Virginia (89 out 95 counties) on 416 farms with a fresh market value of approximately $8 MM. Soil borne pathogens (Pythium spp., Fusarium spp. and Rhizoctonia spp.) Stand reductions of over 50% and stunted plants with low vigor are common in affected sweet corn, especially in the popular supersweet type hybrids and early plantings. The objective of our current research is to (1) determine the most effective fungicide seed treatments and (2) identify the primary pathogens affecting sweet corn seedlings in Virginia.
